Racing the 924 - Overview
In 1979, the 924 was introduced into racing, running initially in North America with the SCCA, where in 1980 it won the first of several National crowns. Also that year, a turbocharged version was run at Le Mans with some success. Subsequently, turbo 924 GTR's would win in the Trans-Am and IMSA, claiming, multiple GTU class title for itself. The rest of this section provides regional information on racing the 924/931 today. Whether you are in the United States, United Kingdon, or New Zealand, racing information or references to it is covered here. D Production
These cars were designed by the factory to race in SCCA D Production Championship starting in 1979. The Porsche project number of these race cars was 933. Only 16 were built by the factory. However, if you had the right connections, you "could" buy the parts as a kit from Porsche to convert your street car into a fully race-ready 924. At least that's what they wanted the SCCA to think. The laundry list of (major) parts in the "kit":
The cars won the D Production Championship a number of times in the early '80's at the hands of experienced Porsche drivers like Doc Bundy. However, the SCCA discontinued running D Prod not long after, and the cars were instantly made obsolete. Except for some cars lucky enough to stay in D Prod trim thanks to running vintage, being in areas where DP was still run locally, or owners wishing to preserve the cars in original form, most DP cars were upgraded to GT3 specs and continue to race in SCCA and/or the Porsche Club of America's Club Racing program. 924 Carrera GTS/GTR
There was a GT, GTS and GTR. The motors were: M31.50/ 210hp/ 8.5CR, M31.60/ 250hp/ 8.0CR, M31.70/ 375hp/ 7.1CR. A GTS number would be wpozzz93zbn71nnnnn. A GTR is numbered wpozzz93zbn72nnnnn.The GTP for 1981 was the proto944 motor with some significant differences. The twin cam had a fixed tension belt driving the intake cam, much more reliable than the production 944S. It was closer to a 924 in most ways. I have pictures as well. It has a hybrid 935 5-speed transaxle(similar to the 956/962). There were GTRs built with the 2.0 924 engine, but the intercooler and intake were very similat to the 944 as was the location and exhaust system with turbo. The engines for all mounted to the bodies with rigid mounts. |
